We arrived in a gale and in the dark…. But we have had a wonderful few days here exploring the area visiting places of interest. At breakfast each morning Phil would suggest places and give an indication re the weather. This really helped. We walked a section of Hadrian’s wall just north of Haltwhistle at Carrfield Quarry and then to the excavations and a most wonderful museum at Vindolanda – so many beautiful objects and including an amazing display of roman footwear…. And writing tablets. A geart spring walk at Cow green reservoir – totally away from everything… a good viewtakes you down the dam and to cauldron snout waterfall. Another good walk – not so far away is high force waterfall but beginning at lowforce by crossing a narrow suspension bridge and walking along the (west) side. There is a high vantage point to view this spectacular falls (just before you reach that point) if you intend to do walks in the Penrith area we found a very good guide (walks in the Penrith area by Graham Allen and Mike Cormen), In Alston – good food at the Angel inn and very good chips at the high plaice. Thank you Phil and Claire for looking after us so well, C&M April 16

Phils kind welcome and hospitality, excellent breakfast and cost accommodation made it a special B&B before mentioning the unexpected “mid-spring winter” scenery with the hills blanched with a dusting of snow making an appropriate backdrop for conversation about artic couooys and other naval matters. M Apr 16

Phil and Claire have been fantastic during our stay here, and I can’t thank them enough. From Phil’s “search and Rescue” mission on the first day when our car failed to cope with some ice and a bit of a hill, throughout the week, always making themselves available if we needed anything. We’ve all had a brilliant time and I would definitely recommend Hill Top to family and friends M & K & E & C & F (Colchester, Essex) Nov 15

Had a very nice, but brief, stay at Hill Top. Loved the peace and the sound of the waders – snipe, redshank, curlew, oystercatcher. Recommend Angel in Alston for evening meal. Thank you for hospitality.    Jun 2015s

Very warm welcome from the hosts, Phi & Claire. Lovely cosy room and accommodation. Fantastic views as promised. Exactly ‘what it said on the tin’.    C & D (Essex) Jun 2015

A very nice stay on our 3rd leg of the C2C. The warm welcome, the nice views, comfy beds, made all the uphill cycling worth it.    H & S (Sweden) Jun 2015

After a brutal day’s climbing to Hartside & Nenthead on the C2C, the view of Hill Top B&B was a very welcoming sight. A warm reception from our host before passing out in a warm and cosy bed. A lovely cooked breakfast before setting off. Would definitely stay here again.    I & M (Sunderland) Jun 2015

Really lovely characterful accommodation. Very comfy bed and everything very clean. We were made very welcome. Loved sitting outside taking in the wonderful view and chatting to the resident hens! Great facilities too with a TV and good selection of DVDs. Would definitely recommend and hope to stay again. Thank you!    J & R (South Lakes) Jun 2015

What a great place to use as a base for exploring the area Great hosts with extensive knowledge of where to go and what to do. The eggs were great too! 10/10    D, K, C, C and V (Abersoch) Jun 2015

A dramatic and interesting place to stay Peaceful with loads of lovely moorland birds. North Pennines just as nice and way quieter than Yorkshire Dales. Free range eggs a nice touch. Shame the trees nearby have been cleared because it’s a bit barren and exposed. Also we’re fairly short people but my head is full of bumps from the low ceiling in the kitchen area. I can hear a cuckoo calling at this moment, fantastic.    C, T & U Jun 2015

The cottage was beautiful and very clean and tidy. The views around and the local villages are spectacular. Would recommend a stay here to anyone. Thank you Phil & Claire for a lovely week. We will definitely be back soon.    L & D Jun 2015

I enjoyed my stay at Hill Top. Excellent room facilities. I spent my time at the South Tyneside Railway ‘Barber’ gala.    K (Duffield) May 2015

What a lovely place. Comfortable beds and an amazing breakfast – we’ll definitely come again!    P & K (Stevenage) May 2015

“Get High!!” It was not easy to push our fully packed bycycles up the hill, but we are glad we did it and had the experience of being at England’s highest B&B at England’s highest ‘A’ road (689). The unique location and its unique host makes Hill Top also a high level B&B for all guests to come. Enjoy this outstanding place in beautiful scenery. Bed and breakfast were also top level. Thanks.    J & L (Netherlands) May 2015

Warm welcome. Room very comfortable. Views to die for. Good food. Everything you would want on a stay. Thanks.    G & S May 2015

Beautiful and lovely cosy place. We really enjoyed our stay here and would love to come back someday.    G & S (Germany) May 2015

What a beautiful cottage and super pet friendly. Everything you could possibly need to make your stay feel like home. Amazing countryside and plenty of walks for all capabilities. Thank you.    J & R (Chesterfield) May 2015

A wonderful welcome from our hosts, Claire & Phil. The views were fantastic and despite poor weather forecast we enjoyed fantastic weather. The cottage was very well equipped and comfortable. Max, our springer spaniel, loved the chickens and sheep. The eggs supplied by Claire and Phi were superb and fresh. A wonderful weekend retreat and we will return.    M, C and M May 2015

Such a relaxing and peaceful location. The cottage has felt like a home from home. From having such a warm welcome on Monday to leaving on Saturday, our hosts have been friendly, helpful and generous. The views here are spectacular and we’ve loved every minute of it. Thank you.   C & M May 2015

Lovely cottage, very comfy and cosy. Thanks Phil, for the great welcome and the eggs. Sad about the weather, we think you should rename to ‘Windy Ridge’. However, irrespective of the bad weather, we did enjoy the visit to Vindolanda and Lowther Castle, a real hidden gem. Thank you for your hospitality.    K, S, B and M (Littlehampton) May 2015

The cttage was clean, warm and cosy. We managed to walk a fair section of Hadrian’s Wall which is why we drove 400 miles from Plymouth to do. We also visited local towns and villages and, over all, had a very good holiday.    C, C, L & S (Plymouth) May 2015

Beautiful, comfortable accommodation in a glorious location. Delicious breakfast and helpful, friendly hosts. Would highly recommend.   CW (West Lothian) Apr 2015

Thank you for a delightful stay. Great location and welcome. A delicious breakfast certainly sets you up for the day.    E (Newcastle) Apr 2015

Enjoyed our stay, lovely cottage, and lovely area. Walking up to complete snow white out was not something I expected. Had a very relaxing break. Will be back no problem.    Apr 2015

Always a great treat to return to this lovely retreat. Great location and beautiful walks. Perfect welcome every time from Claire & Phil, our hosts. See you again soon.    C & R Apr 2015

Very comfortable. Super veggie breakfast (courtesy of the hens). Glorious views and great welcome.    H Apr 2015

Spectacular views on arrival and friendly informative greeting from Phil. Blew a gale and snowed all night! Thank you for your hospitality – it was lovely to meet you.    D & K (Surrey) Apr 2015

This is our third visit to the scenic spot and although the weather could be improved upon, the house was warm and cosy as usual.    M & D Apr 2015

Thank you for the lovely stay in this quiet and cosy place.    L & R Apr 2015

It has been a delight sharing a part of Claire & Phil’s wonderfully remote home. They are the perfect hosts. As others have said, very cosy and warm and a super breakfast each morning set us up for the day. We ate at The Overwater Restaurant on our first evening as it’s nearby. Food was nice but it’s expensive. E.g. £9.10 for 1 glass of wine and 1 bottle of ale!! Now we head up to Inverness! Thank you.    J & T (Dorset) Apr 2015

Lovely little retreat away from the hustle and bustle. We didn’t get to meet Claire but Phil was very welcoming and very helpful. The eggs were lovely. The Angel Inn in Alston does lovely meals. Stay clear of the Nenthall Hotel – the food was awful and not cheap! Once again, thank you.    C, A, S & P Mar 15

Wow, what a fantastic place to stay. Views to die for, great location away from it all but handy for exploring this fantastic part of England. I have, up until this visit, loved Yorkshire, BUT NOT any longer. This place needs to be put on the map, but I also want to keep this hidden gem for ourselves. The cottage is cosy and warm, great hosts from Phil & Claire and we will be returning very soon. Everything you need from a quiet, secluded retreat to get away from the madness of modern life. Visited many places that have been on my wish list for many years: Beamish, Hadrian’s Wall and many more. I really don’t want to leave and go home, Phil, Claire, when can we move in? Perfect weather, and we got to have some snow!! Track up to cottage no problem at all. Would I recommend this place? Without a doubt, but we want to keep it to ourselves. Thanks, Phil & Claire, for a fantastic stay, and the eggs. Hope to see you very soon. p.s. the dogs loved this place and really enjoyed the smells in the paddock and the snow.    S, M and 2 kids + 2 dogs (Kent) Mar 2015

This has to be the best pressy ever my wife has bought me since 1977 – OK I know the snow was an added bonus. 18” with 4 foot drifts. Never have I been happier leaving my motor car on a quiet main road. On arrival at the cottage, with great help from the owners, the view, the log fire, the whole package. Peace, tranquillity, perfect. Cornwall, Scotland, Lakes – nothing can match this wonderful area. Thanks very much for giving us the opportunity to come here. We will return for sure, possibly in the Summer, or possibly we may hope for snow again. Thank you so very much for not cancelling due to snow. Best holiday since Austria in the 70’s and 80’s. Hope to see you soon.    M & A Feb 2015

We had a lovely stay thank you. The cottage was cosy and comfortable. We had lots of lovely walks and took our bikes to Hamsterley Forest.. Choice of artwork is unusual for family accommodation – my daughter was frightened by the pictures (owners comment: the pictures in the cottage are by Salvador Dali) The cottage had everything we needed although would benefit from a paring knife (the knives were blunt – difficult to use). Thank you and thanks for the eggs. My daughter loved seeing the chickens.    The Ts Feb 2015

We stayed for Valentine’s Day and had a lovely time. Phil was a perfect host and very friendly. The breakfast was superb and the accommodation is so homely and cosy. We loved the low beam in the room and being able to look out of the windows to see the stunning views. Can’t wait to come back and stay for longer.    R & J (Halifax) Mar 15

We wanted to get away from it all after a very busy December. WOW! This is so perfect. What a gem I a very remote part of England. Our dogs had a fab time (hope we’ve not left too much mud to clean). Hadrian’s Wall was brill in the blustery winds and Housesteads Café/info is open most of the year. We escaped to Keswick (sorry Claire) but returned this enchantment of a perfect hideaway. Thank you Phil & Claire.    M, A & 2 dogs Jan 2015

Amazing place to get away from everything. Will be back for sure. Thanks.    M, L & dogs Jan 2015

Lovely scenic place. Comfy room, beautiful breakfast and fantastic hosts. They go out of their way to make sure you are OK. Thank you.    L & R (Blackpool) Jan 2015

Lovely stay, dogs loved it. Perfect retreat.

Really lovely place! Thank you for your kindness. Amazing view of the night sky. Wow! Thank you.    R & family (Clitheroe)

Lovely stay here in the snow and some fantastic walks for Mischa and Floyd. Wonderful hospitality from our hosts, we hope to return! (p.s. the eggs were absolutely delicious!)    D, R & dogs Dec 2014

Great holiday, lovely walks. Cow Green Reservoir to Cauldron Snout a highlight. Some excellent food – The Hemel Café at Alleheads – good for coffee and toasted tea cake. The deli at No. 4 opposite Hexham Abbey – lovely local cheese platter. The Rat Inn at Anick – very popular – excellent pheasant and salmon. The Duke of Wellinton – Newton – in good pub guide – very attractive presentation. Langdon Beck Hotel – warming soup and fascinating geology room. Nenthead Overwater Restaurant – need to book – very good food. Very small, only 3 tables. Cragside, Walington and Kllhope worth visits.  V, P & C Nov 2015
